NEIGHBORHOODS OF WARD 6: Ward 6 is the transition between central and west Somerville. Ward 6 is home to Davis Square, one of two central business districts in the city. Davis Square is home to the only MBTA subway stop in Somerville, and many bus lines also converge in the square. Davis Square has been called "The Paris of Boston" in describing its bustling restaurants and cafés that draw patrons from miles around, thriving locally-owned retail shops, and a summer Farmer's Market. It also features large public gathering spaces. The brick patio in the Square and Seven Hills Park provide spaces for demonstrations, musical performances, and the Somerville Arts Council's annual ArtBeat celebration. The West Branch of the Somerville Public Library is also in Davis Square.
But Davis Square is not all there is to Ward 6. There is another business district along Broadway through Ball Square and the adjacent Powder House rotary, home to some of the best-known cafés and breakfast spots in the greater Boston area. Most of the Somerville half of Tufts University is in Ward 6 and many Tufts students and employees also reside in the Ward. The Somerville Community Path and Linear Park, built on the right-of-way of the former Lexington branch of the Boston and Lowell Railroad, cross the entire ward and pass through Davis Square. Finally, while Porter Square, with its large shopping center, subway, and commuter rail stop, is technically in Cambridge, the southern portion of Ward 6 is directly adjacent to that area.
