NEIGHBORHOODS OF WARD 3: Located on the western side of Ward 3, Spring Hill is a mainly residential district predominantly characterized by multi-family homes. Landmarks of Spring Hill include Somerville Hospital and the Round House. Close proximity to Somerville Ave and the streetcar line from Lechmere fueled population growth for Spring Hill in the early 20th century. Prospect Hill, which lies to the east of Spring Hill, is known best for the historically significant tower at the top of the hill. During the American Revolution, this hill was the site where the first flag of the American colonies was raised. Union Square is the main commercial neighborhood in an otherwise residential Ward 3, and is in fact one of the primary commercial districts in the entire city. Trademarks of Union Square include small, local shops, and bars. The Union Square area is very ethnically diverse, and many of the neighborhood stores cater to these different communities. The Square is in the midst of a new economic development plan in preparation for the arrival of a new Green Line T station.
