NEIGHBORHOODS OF WARD 1:East Somerville, the Ward’s primary residential neighborhood,is located along Somerville’s border with the City of Boston and within walking distance of the Sullivan Square Orange Line MBTA station. McGrath Highway and I-93 are also very accessible. The neighborhood consists of a strong residential area with a commercial district along Broadway. Broadway is one of the city’s major thoroughfares. The commercial district consists of a variety of restaurants, specialty stores, and retail storefronts. East Somerville Main Streets has been working actively with local businesses to increase commercial activity in this corridor. Neighborhood residents can make use of Foss Park, one of the largest parks in the city, and they have access to the Mystic River waterfront. Assembly Square is a 145-acre commercial and industrial district located at the northeast corner of the city on the Boston City line, directly accessible from Interstate 93 and State Route 28. As discussed below, this property is the target of major redevelopment. The Inner Belt district is a manufacturing and warehouse district that was the former home of the McLean Hospital. In the 1950s, the area the “Inner Belt” highway was expected to be a boon to the area, but neighborhood protest stopped the highway construction. Today, warehouses, offices, distribution facilities, and light manufacturing are the primary uses for the district. Major businesses located in the area include the UPS distribution facilities, the MBTA commuter rail headquarters, MassEnvelope, Partner Health Care Systems, and the Holiday Inn. Due to its location near Boston and Cambridge, with excellent highway access, the Inner Belt will continue to be a strong economic development district for the City.
